Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)

Vitamin D is well-known for its actions on calcium metabolism and bone health, but it also has important properties for joint health. One mechanism is by effects on maintaining healthy bone mass. Bone around chronically sore joints exhibits microfractures and/or hardening that are suspected as being causes of joint discomfort. Thus, maintaining healthy bone mass can help maintain joint comfort. Second, Vitamin D has its own health-promoting effects on joint tissues and cells. Third, deficient intakes and/or status of Vitamin D has been associated with poorer joint health. Fourth, prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency has recently been exposed to be more common than previously thought.

The daily intake of Vitamin D shown to help maintain and/or improve bone mass in humans over 40 years old is 800 IU, preferably as Vitamin D3.
