Drug InteractionsPossibility of interactions with medications is a foremost concern for people taking dietary supplements, and they will ask their health care professional for advice. Unfortunately, the level of prospective research and information on potential interactions between nutrients and medications (drugs) is not as developed as anyone wants. There is empirical evidence for the nutrients contained in the product to support general statements about interactions.
Normal Components, Normal Levels
The ingredients in the product are all normal components of the human body, except for Uniflex®. The flavonoids in Uniflex® are found in common foods, and thus, are not foreign to the body and can be found in most persons’ blood and urine. While commonality does not mean there are no interactions with medications, the presence of normal bodily components at physiological and dietary intake levels provided by supplementation do not elevate levels of these nutrients beyond the body’s ability to utilize, transport and metabolize them. In other words, presence of these nutrients from supplements does not exceed the levels usually present or seen in the human body. Thus, if a person is going to have an interaction between one of these nutrients and drugs, it will have already happened (or not) since these nutrients have already been exposed to the drug (and vice versa). This logic supports a decreased potential for drug interactions.
Empirical Evidence
Empirical evidence is what has actually been observed or experienced, and not a theory or interpretation. Long history of use for Glucosamine, Chondroitin, HA (mostly as an injectable), Vitamin D, and the flavonoids in Uniflex® have not led to any obvious interactions with this product. Post-marketing surveillance for Glucosamine, Chondroitin, HA and Uniflex® ingredients has not found specific problems with drug interactions that have been confirmed or reproduced. Vitamin D amounts are sufficient to raise serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D to healthier parts of the reference range. MSM has less history of use than the other nutrients, but chemical unreactivity, GRAS status and ubiquitous occurrence in foods, water and bodies suggest that interactions with medications are not expected. Thus, practical experience has not found any obvious interactions with medications for doses used in Move Free® Advanced.
Specific Safety Studies
As mentioned previously, each nutrient in the product has undergone in vitro and animal safety testing, usually at doses far higher than ingested by humans. These studies are scattered throughout the peer-reviewed literature over time, but they lead to the same conclusion for each ingredient – apparent safety and lack of tissue histology changes. Furthermore, the metabolism of each nutrient is known with enough certainty to be able to deduce that they do not affect the normal drug-metabolizing pathways. Move Free® Advanced itself has been tested in two separate human clinical studies, and no apparent adverse effects or interactions with medications were seen, although the subject number is limited to draw conclusions that would extrapolate to populations. Rescue medications (acetaminophen and ibuprofen) were allowed and consumed by some of these subjects, again, without apparent interactions.
Summary
Unless there is a specific medication that is known to interact with one of the ingredients, in general, there is no expectation of adverse interactions with medications. Empirical observations and experience supports the knowledge base for each nutrient that interactions are unlikely. However, there will never be zero chance for interactions, and individual differences between people and their changing health states still exist. If there is a concern about interactions with a medication, discontinue and restart at a lower dose and slowly escalate, with care taken to watch for any potential interactions. |
